Development of Masthuggskajen will see Gothenburg city centre extend westwards, in closer proximity to the water. Reinforcing the link between the river and the districts of Linné, Majorna and Centrum, a new sustainable urban area is being formed, fusing the fast pace of the city with local life.
Masthuggskajen is being developed by the City of Gothenburg in partnership with a consortium including Elof Hansson Fastigheter, Folkets Hus Göteborg, NCC Property Development, Riksbyggen Economic Association, Stena Fastigheter Göteborg and Riverside Development Company. Part of RiverCity Gothenburg, the area is included in the Gothenburg region’s growth strategy, which is concerned with the development of the city’s central districts.
The area will feature vibrant streets and squares in addition to 1,000 residences and 125,000 m2 of office space, local enterprises and cultural attractions.
Four firms of architects have been working on proposals relating to the configuration of the Masthuggskajen district around Första Långgatan. The evaluation group, which included representatives from the City of Gothenburg and the consortium, chose Kanozi/ÅF, whose proposal was considered to be the most visionary and flexible, with a compelling central structure and the potential to meet the objectives specified in the RiverCity Gothenburg vision. You can read the interim report here and the final report here.
The aim is to have a plan which comes into legal effect during 2016. This will enable us to commence construction during 2017, with the first residents hopefully moving into the new Masthuggskajen in 2019 or 2020.
